New Government, Changing Rules — and a New Tight Deadline
In late 2025, many Canadian homeowners like us got hit with unexpected news: the federal Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan programs that help fund home energy efficiency upgrades were closing earlier than expected. The Greener Homes Grant officially closed to new applicants at the end of 2025 — and the interest-free Greener Homes Loan program stopped accepting applications as of October 1, 2025.
These incentives offered up to $5,000 in grant funding and up to $40,000 in interest-free loans to help make insulation, windows, and energy efficiency upgrades more affordable — a huge help for families planning upgrades.
We had been accepted into the program and were planning to do our upgrade next summer — but with the sudden policy shift and deadlines looming, that plan was tossed out the window.

Winter Came Early — and Harder
Instead of a long, comfortable project next June, we found ourselves doing deep retrofit work in November, right in the thick of Newfoundland’s early winter. Some days felt like −18 °C, snow on the ground, and bone-chilling winds that made every outdoor task twice as hard. (Weather records confirm that Newfoundland often sees early snow and lows in the −15 to −20 °C range in November.) ❄️
What would normally have been a 1–2 week job stretched out to 4+ weeks under those conditions — not because the work was inherently complicated, but because the weather and timing made everything slower.
Family, Friends & Teamwork to the Rescue
This project wouldn’t have happened without help.
My youngest son flew in from Montreal just to lend a hand — and his energy and endurance were critical when we were out in the cold working longer days than planned.
A huge shout-out to my good friend, the owner of Governor’s Renovations in Marysvale, Tom (709-222-9000) — one of the best carpenters you could ask for — who helped expertly install all our new windows (bye-bye drafty 1980s originals).
While they handled the windows, the rest of the family and I installed 2″ total of solar-backed foam + Rockwall fireproof insulation around the house. (I may not have the exact product name perfect, but the result is excellent — a much thicker, tougher thermal envelope that should pay dividends.) With all the forest fires last year, choosing fire-resistant materials was a no-brainer.

The Warmth is Real — and So Are the Savings
Now that the dust has settled and winter has really set in, the difference is incredible.
🔥 The air in the house hardly moves anymore
🔥 Heat stays where it’s supposed to stay
🔥 Rooms warm faster and stay warm longer
I’m genuinely excited to see our first electricity bill post-retrofit — the potential savings from reduced energy use and better insulation could be significant.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning your own home into a more energy-efficient, comfortable space — especially knowing it was a family and friends effort.

Christmas & New Year: A Season of Joy (and a Little Sadness)
December brought wonderful moments too — both of my sons were home for the holidays, and that alone made the long, cold month worth it.
But it wasn’t without its challenges. We said goodbye to our beloved cat of 17 years just before Christmas, a loss that hit our family hard. ❤️
Then, right after New Year’s, it looked like we might lose our 16-year-old chihuahua — but thankfully she pulled through and has since bounced back. That second chance felt like the best New Year’s gift we could ask for.
Looking Ahead
If this story tells you one thing, it’s that:
✔️ Government programs can be invaluable — but they can also change fast.
✔️ Being flexible and ready to act can make all the difference.
✔️ A strong team of family and skilled trades makes challenging work feel achievable.
We’re excited to share more about how these upgrades affect our energy usage and costs in early 2026 — and maybe help you make decisions for your own home’s energy future.
